Thurston's Program for the Geometrization of 3-dimensional manifolds establishes a close connection between (in particular hyperbolic) geometry and 3-dimensional topology whose development over the past 20 years was greatly influenced. It incorporates, for instance, the Poincaré Conjecture and embeds it into a broader geometric context. The aim of the talk will be to explain the Thurston Program, its open questions and to discuss some recent results.
