On special subvarieties of abelian varieties

An abelian variety over the complex numbers is an algebraic group isomorphic to a complex vector space modulo a discrete subgroup of maximal rank. An irreducible closed subvariety of an abelian variety is called special if it is a translate of an abelian subvariety by a torsion point. I will discuss various known results and open questions concerning the relation between special subvarieties and arbitrary subvarieties.
