Abstract: In recent years there has been considerable activity in the problem of constructing multiscale transforms which are (unlike conventional wavelet transforms) well-adapted to data with directional features. Two highlights of these developments are the curvelet transform introduced by Candes and Donoho and the shearlet transform introduced by Labate et. al. We give an introduction to this theory and present some new results and directions for future research.
