Abstract: On the example of spaces of linear finite element/spline functions over triangulations, I will discuss the most popular projection operators (node interpolation, quasi-interpolation (Clement), L_2, and H^1 projection), and how they depend on the underlying triangulations.

In the second part, I will report some findings on L_2 projections and prewavelet constructions on arbitrary triangulations, and list unsolved problems.
