Abstract: During my visit at HIM Bonn in summer, I learned a lot about some fresh ideas of representing large (structured) data sets in compressed form using tensor techniques. In this first talk, I will introduce the basic ideas and provide some motivating examples, borrowing from papers by Hackbusch (Leipzig), Grasedyck (Aachen), and Oseledets and Tyrtyshnikov (Moscow).
