"Snaking between stripes and spots"

Abstract: We use pde2path, a new Matlab package for continuation and bifurcation in 2D elliptic systems, to investigate numerically stationary spatially localized patterns of the 2D reaction diffusion Schnakenberg system in parameter regions where hexagonal spot and stripe patterns are both stable. The branch of these localized patterns bifurcates from the stripes and "snakes" to the spot branch, alternating between stable and unstable sections. We relate these numerical results with heuristic arguments obtained from a Ginzburg-Landau reduction.
