Abstract: The presentation aims at introducing the basic theory of characters, as an essential tool in the study of (finite) group representations. The included topics will range from definitions to an overview of the general relations (with special emphasis on the orthogonality of characters), culminating with the fundamental theorem of finite group representations (which establishes an intrinsic connection between the number of irreducible representations a finite group admits and its number of conjugacy classes).
