Abstract: Shearlet systems are generalizations of wavelet systems which are built using the unitary representation of a particular group and which optimally represent the geometry of images. During the first half of this talk the underlying group structure of shearlets will be presented. By showing that this structure embeds into the Lie group of symplectic matrices, one is able to generalize the transform to higher dimensions by exploiting the associated representation theory. The second half of the talk will focus on applications, in particular image inpainting, and show how shearlet-based methods out-perform other standard approaches.
