Abstract: About 90 years ago or so quantum mechanics was founded by scientists like Heisenberg, Schrdinger, Dirac, and many others as a consistent and proper description of physical processes such as the emission and absorption of light quanta -photons- by atoms and molecules. The mathematically correct formulation of this theory is a challenge to science to this very day. This talk reviews the mathematical framework of models for nonrelativistic matter (atoms and molecules) coupled to the quantized radiation field and highlights some of the mathematical progress made in the past two decades in this field. This includes stability of atoms, existence of resonances, and decoherence of qubits.
The colloquium is preceded by tea from 16:45 in the Resnikoff Mathematics Common Room, Research I, 127.
