Abstract: We present rigorous proofs for the optimal potential vorticity balance method introduced by ViĆ¹dez and Dritschel for a finite dimensional toy model of semi-geostrophic dynamics. This method generates initial conditions of Hamiltonian multi-scale systems which are adiabatically void of fast degrees of freedom. In particular, we show how the accuracy of the balancing procedure depends on the chosen ramping function. This is joint work with G.A. Gottwald and M. Oliver.
