Abstract: I will review some old joint work with O. Bühler on interpreting the dynamics of passive advection in a sheer flow as wave propagation on the Fourier lattice. The transition from numerically resolved to unresolved scales can then be seen as imposing transparent boundary conditions at the cut-off wavenumber in the Fourier domain. I will discuss some implications of this idea as well as suggestions for further work.
