"First steps to backscatter in the Finite Element/Finite Volume Ocean Model"

Date: Wed, October 18, 2017
Time: 14:15
Place: Research I Seminar Room

Abstract: I will give an introduction to the concept of backscatter in ocean models and its importance for an improved representation of eddy kinetic energy in the eddy permitting resolution range (around 1/10–1/4 degree resolution). First results of the backscatter parametrization in the Finite Element Ocean Model and the Finite Volume Ocean Model will be presented, in a periodic channel test case with boundaries in the North and South. The new implementations lead to strongly increased eddy kinetic energy that corresponds to simulations with higher resolution. Furthermore, I will discuss the consequences of a grid mode that appears in the triangular mesh discretization and which affects the implementation of a sub-grid energy equation used to calculate the amplitude of the backscatter. Future perspectives and applications will be discussed as well.
