Abstract: The time evolution of a system of particles in non-relativistic quantum mechanics is described by the Schrödinger equation. On the microscopic level, this is always a linear partial differential equation. However, for systems with very many particles, non-linear Schrödinger equations can arise as an approximation to the microscopic linear dynamics. The justification of this approximation is an active research field of mathematical physics. In my talk, I will try to give a brief overview of this field. In particular, I will discuss the main ideas that lead to a derivation of the Hartree equations for bosonic systems
