Abstract: Current climate models still suffer from many biases which are partly due to excessive subgrid-scale dissipation. In my talk I will present results in developing energy consistent kinetic energy backscatter schemes in atmospheric circulation models. Both, deterministic and stochastic backscatter schemes improve low-resolution compared with high-resolution simulations. I will also present a method to compute state-dependent co-variance matrices for the stochastic backscatter scheme based on an approximation of the Koopman operator using Dynamic Mode Decomposition.
