Now that Fermat's Last Theorem has been proved, number theorists are in need of a new Holy Grail. An attractive candidate is the abc conjecture, which was formulated in 1985 by Joseph Oesterlé and David Masser. It centers upon the equation a+b=c. The speaker will show how anybody familiar with the ABCs of arithmetic can contribute to the study of the conjecture.
