Abstract: There is a strong connection between classical group theory and classical analysis. The best-known cases are Fourier Analysis, the Peter-Weyl Theorem and the Heisenberg Uncertainty Relations. Some of this can be extended to the infinite dimensional setting of direct limit groups. When the groups are all Lie groups I'll describe how this is done for the Peter-Weyl Theorem and indicate how it goes for the Heisenberg groups.
