Abstract: Amoebas and coamoebas are the logarithmic images of algebraic varieties and the images of algebraic varieties under the arg-map, respectively. They form a central link between (real as well as complex) algebraic geometry and tropical geometry.
In the first part of the talk we provide some insights into the primary geometric and combinatorial concepts of amoebas, coamoebas, as well as their computational aspects. In the second part of the talk we then discuss some recent developments (on amoebas of genus 1 as well as on the computation of amoebas via sums of squares and semidefinite programming). Based on joint work with Timo de Wolff.
