Abstract: The aim of my two talks is to discuss an invariant of a projective variety called the Hilbert polynomial. In this second talk, we shall define the dimension and the degree of a variety. Then, we shall look at the gradation of the coordinate ring of a projective variety, and compute the dimension for each homogeneous component. The dimension as a function of the homogeneous degree k is called the Hilbert function of the projective variety. We shall verify that this function coincides with a polynomial for sufficiently large values of k.
