Abstract: The Kodaira-Spencer mapping and basic theorems on the existence of (universal) families will be discussed in general. Applying these to the case of Riemann surfaces where obstructions vanish for formal reasons, it will be shown that the universal deformation space exists with tangent space the dual of the space of quadratic differentials.
