"FESOM eddy-permittung to eddy-resolving channel simulations and the application of an energy backscatter parametrization"

Abstract: In the talk I will dicuss a channel configuration of the Finite Element Sea ice-Ocean Model FESOM and how variable resolution from eddy-permitting to eddy-resolving affects the channel eddy kinetic energy representation. Especially the transitions from coarse to fine and back to coarse resolution pose interesting numerical and physical problems that will need to be addressed in global ocean simulations. One way to address these issues is the use of an energy backscatter parametrization which is designed to add energy to the system where it has been removed due to excessive dissipation.
