Abstract: I will give a short overview about the concept of stratified turbulence that describes the energy transfer in the mesoscales of the atmosphere between the quasi-geostrophic and isotropic regime. A particular emphasis will be spent on the roles of gravity waves. In the second part, I will discuss the Dynamic Smagorinsky Model (DSM) as a turbulence parametrization in general and our application into the atmospheric modeling. Finally, I want to end with a perspective view about a higher-order development of the DSM.
